Dieter Herzog joined Fortuna in 1970 and quickly established himself as a leading figure in the team. In six years, he played 392 matches for the club, including 253 official ones, and scored 81 goals.
In his first season, he scored 13 goals, helping Fortuna to promotion to the Bundesliga, a milestone that marked the start of a hugely successful era for the club.
Between August 1970 and November 1974, Herzog played an impressive 158 consecutive league matches.
Herzog then joined Bayer Leverkusen, for whom he ended up playing 213 matches and scoring 37 goals.
