“I hid it well, but today I was desperate. I know how old I am, but I knew this might be my last chance to go to the World Cup,” Robertson shared.
The captain said that thoughts about his friend did not leave him even during the decisive battle:
“Today I couldn’t get Dioga out of my head. We talked so much about the trip to the World Cup, because at one time he missed the tournament with the Portuguese national team, and I missed the tournament with Scotland. I know that today he was smiling at me from above,” the defender said.
Robertson also noted the incredible atmosphere in the team and the role of the head coach. According to him, Steve Clarke’s pre-match speech was the key moment of the evening.
“The manager remembered everything we’ve been through. Euro qualification, celebrating in the Wunderbar… He said: ‘Let’s do it again’. We were very touched. To do it for him, the staff and our families is one of the best nights of my life,” the defender emphasized.
Concluding the interview with BBC Scotland presenter Kelly Cates (daughter of Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish), Robertson added a touch of trademark humor to his words:
“We helped the country through this and I’m sure it was worth it. And now I can’t wait to get back to Liverpool to drink red wine with your dad.”
