As reported by Goal, the FPF is preparing an appeal to FIFA with the demand to reduce the three-match suspension of the 40-year-old captain.
Ronaldo received a straight red card in the lost match against Ireland in Dublin (0:2).
After reviewing the VAR, the referee noted that the Portuguese had elbowed Irish defender Dara O’Shea. This red card was the first for Ronaldo in 226 matches for the national team.
The current three-match suspension puts the legendary forward’s participation in the opening games of the 2026 World Cup in jeopardy, which should be his sixth in his career.
In its appeal, the Portuguese federation plans to insist that the player’s decision was provoked by the hostile atmosphere at the stadium in Dublin, where fans constantly booed Ronaldo.
They hope that FIFA will take these circumstances into account and soften the punishment.
