Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has openly called his move to Chelsea in 2022 “the biggest mistake”. In an interview with Canal+, the 36-year-old veteran, who is now successfully playing for Marseille, spoke about a disastrous period at the London club.

Aubameyang moved to Chelsea from Barcelona to reunite with Thomas Tuchel, under whom he played at Borussia Dortmund. However, the German coach was fired just six days after the transfer.

“At that time, I had a bad period in Barcelona. My house was robbed. Also, Barca needed to sell a player – me or Memphis Depay,” explained Aubameyang. “The only option on the table was Chelsea. So I said: ‘OK, for my family’s sake I will go, even if it’s Chelsea…” – emphasized the striker.

The forward hoped that his transfer would be similar to the successful transfer of Olivier Giroud from Arsenal to Chelsea, but quickly realized that for him it would be different.

Aubameyang’s spell at Chelsea proved to be a failure, scoring just three goals in 21 appearances. Under new coach Graham Potter, he lost his place in the squad, and in February he was even excluded from the team’s bid for the Champions League playoffs.

He moved to Marseille on a free transfer in the summer of 2023, where he immediately found his form, scoring 30 goals in his first season and setting a new Europa League goalscoring record.
