In particular, one of the main points of discussion was the unassigned penalty in the second half in favor of the “white and blue” for a foul by the “miners” defender Juchym Konoply against the Kyiv winger Shola. The Committee of Referees of the Ukrainian Football Association recognized this decision as erroneous.
“During the fight for the ball in the penalty area, player #16 of Dynamo successfully pushed the ball and had the opportunity to continue possession, but was carelessly attacked by defender #26 of Shakhtar.
The main referee, despite the fact that he was relatively close to the episode, did not have the optimal viewing angle to fully assess the moment. As a result, he did not register a violation of the rules and allowed the game to continue.
As we can see in the video replays, only one angle from behind the gate gave a full and fair picture of the episode. VAR referees had this angle at their disposal, unlike the main referee, but did not offer him a view on the field. This could provide the referee with additional information to make the correct decision on the award of a penalty, because such an action by the defender falls under the definition of a foul that should be punished by the award of a penalty.
The referees’ committee considers this decision of the VAR referee to be wrong and calls on the VAR referees in such situations to recommend the chief referee to review the episode,” the UAF referees’ committee comments.
It is noted that the UAF ethics and fair play committee has opened an official investigation into this episode.
