The incident happened near the Jean Buen Stadium on Wednesday evening. According to French media, the men were calmly waiting to enter with fans when BRB special forces officers carried out a lightning arrest operation.
The robbery of the Louvre took place a few days earlier — on Sunday, October 19. Criminals in balaclavas took advantage of renovation work near the Seine embankment to enter the museum via a freight elevator. Two people got into the Apollo Gallery, the third was waiting outside.
Nine items from the Napoleon and Empress Josephine’s jewelry collection were taken out of the museum, including a necklace, a brooch and a diadem. The most valuable exhibit, the Regent’s diamond weighing 140.64 carats, remained in place.
The value of the stolen jewels is estimated at 88 million euros. The police have already detained six suspects, but the jewelry itself has not been found yet.
