According to a source, FIFA is struggling to agree a broadcast rights deal for the revamped Club World Cup, which is scheduled for June-July 2025, prompting the organization’s president to call an emergency meeting with several top executives in the broadcasting industry on Friday, 20 September
It said the participating clubs had not been informed of the amount of compensation for participation or the distribution of prize money, although it was initially estimated that the top clubs could earn about $50 million for participating in the tournament.
FIFA initially held talks with Apple, which holds the exclusive rights to broadcast MLS matches, but no deal was reached, prompting the governing body to look for other deal options. FIFA is also concerned about the lack of sponsors willing to participate in the World Cup.
Competition from sporting events such as the European Women’s Championship and Wimbledon has meant that TV slots are already booked, CBS Sports CEO David Burson said. He noted that, given the availability of rights to broadcast UEFA tournaments, this FIFA tournament is not a priority.
“We are looking at all offers. I am not shying away from the answer, we will evaluate each one individually based on its value. At the moment we already have content with the leading European teams for almost a whole year. So we have to evaluate what additional value this will have during this period,” Berson said.
The meeting is also expected to be attended by PSG and European Club Association president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, as FIFA looks to attract more clubs, create more certainty about the tournament, attract sponsors and dispel doubts among the Champions League.
