Details: The Nordic-Baltic Eight Plus countries, located near the Baltic and North Seas, will now require proof of insurance from suspicious vessels passing through the English Channel, the Danish Straits, the Denmark-Sweden strait and the Gulf of Finland.

“Information collected by participating states, in particular regarding those vessels that have decided not to respond to requests, will be evaluated and analyzed together with our international partners,” the statement said.

The states emphasized that they are “determined” to bring the “shadow fleet” to justice, including through sanctions, for the support it provides to Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The “Nordic-Baltic Eight Plus” format covers the Baltic countries, Great Britain, Denmark, Iceland, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Poland, Finland and Sweden.

Russia has organized a “shadow fleet” of more than 600 tankers, whose owners are often hidden through shell companies, and has used it to evade the G7 price limit of $60 a barrel. Iran and Venezuela also use this tactic for similar purposes.

Not only are these vessels creaky and mostly unregulated, they are often uninsured. In the event of a leak or more serious spill, it will be difficult for governments to hold these vessels accountable.

We will remind, on December 16, the Council of the EU adopted the 15th package of sanctions against Russia, designed to counteract the circumvention of sanctions by targeting the Russian “shadow fleet” and to weaken the Russian military-industrial complex.
