1,000 bodies of the dead were returned to Ukraine – headquarters

On January 29, a thousand bodies of the dead, which, according to the Russian side, belong to Ukrainian defenders, were returned to Ukraine, the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported.

“Law enforcement investigators together with expert institutions of Ukraine will take all necessary measures aimed at identifying the repatriated dead,” the message says.

In December, 1,003 bodies of the dead were returned to Ukraine.

In the summer of 2025, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Ihor Klymenko, reported that during the return of the dead, Russia handed over to Ukraine the bodies of Russian soldiers, mixed with the bodies of Ukrainians. The Ministry of Internal Affairs noted that they had established the names of these soldiers.

In June, the final stage of repatriation measures carried out in accordance with the Istanbul Agreement took place, in total Ukraine received 6,057 bodies. After that, examinations and identification of the repatriated bodies were carried out.

In Ukraine, more than 70,000 people are considered missing under special circumstances. Such data were announced in June 2025 by Artur Dobroserdov, the Commissioner for the Issues of Persons Disappeared Under Special Circumstances. According to him, it will be possible to determine the fate of many of them only after the end of the war or the active phase of hostilities.
