“Cleanliness in agreements is important to us. There are issues regarding minorities, and I believe we have done a lot, there are conclusions of the European Commission that we have no comments on this issue… But the bilateral document contains not only what one side wants, it contains what is important for security , for the present and the future of both parties. Hungary’s support of Ukraine in NATO is important to us. The document does not include today’s support from Hungary (our membership) in NATO. And since there is no such thing, this document is not signed. That’s the end of it,” the head of state said at a press conference following his participation in the summit of the European Political Community.
Over the past year, Ukraine has signed bilateral security agreements with many countries that are members of the European Union and NATO. These agreements usually include recognition by partners and allies that they support Ukraine joining these blocs.
In total, Ukraine has already signed up to 30 such bilateral security agreements: with Great Britain, Germany, France, Denmark, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Finland, Latvia, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden, Iceland, Norway, Japan, the USA, the EU, Estonia , Lithuania, Poland, Luxembourg, Romania, the Czech Republic and Slovenia.
The agreements are signed within the framework of the declaration of support for Ukraine, adopted in Vilnius in July 2023 by the countries of the “Group of Seven”.
