In March 2023, Hungarian journalists reported: Ukraine is considering Fedor Sandor for the post of ambassador to Budapest. He is a Ukrainian of Hungarian origin from Transcarpathia, better known as the “professor from the trenches”, he volunteered to go to war in February 2022.

On August 8, 2023, the President of Hungary, Katalin Novak, agreed to the appointment of a new ambassador of Ukraine. It took months for Novak to agree on the appointment of Uzhgorod National University professor, military officer Fedor Sandor as ambassador. It is not reported what caused the signing of the agreement now.
