Ukraine tried to convince the United States to allow it to strike deep into Russia with American weapons, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said in an interview with journalist Farid Zakaria on CNN.

“Everyone is looking at the decision of the United States. Everyone is waiting for such decisions. After that they make a decision. This is true. And that’s why we really wanted to use these weapons and simply attack military bases with these planes, not civilian infrastructure,” the president explained.

At the same time, he confirmed that “Ukraine simply wants to be able to attack bases that are used for bombing Ukrainian territory.”

“These planes, these jet planes, from there they use not only missiles, they drop four thousand guided air bombs every month, only in the east of our territory, four thousand bombs. And these bombs and rockets hit the Ukrainian civilian population, schools, and the energy sector. Our entire energy infrastructure is 80% destroyed. These guided bombs,” the president emphasized.

At the same time, the head of Ukraine noted that “during meetings with partners, he already informed them that they waited too long.”

“Now Russia has started moving its planes from 100, 150 kilometers, 300 to 500. After that, I will tell you that now we need more permits,” the president emphasized.

To Zakaria’s question whether Ukraine currently has permission to carry out deep strikes against Russia, the president answered – no.

Previously, Western countries did not allow Ukraine to strike the internationally recognized territory of Russia with high-precision long-range systems that they supply to Kyiv. However, as a result of the visit of British Foreign Minister David Lammy and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, London could lift such a restriction – this was not officially announced, but The Guardian newspaper wrote about it with reference to sources. Blinken also hinted during the visit that the US might lift a ban on similar use of ATACMS.
