Turkey asks the US to ease sanctions against Gazprombank in order to pay the Russian Federation for gas

Turkey is negotiating with the United States to soften the regime of sanctions against Russia, which would allow it to continue using Gazprombank to pay for natural gas imports.

Bloomberg writes about it.

Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said that without US permission, “we will not be able to pay Russia.”

“If there is no exception, this could have very serious consequences for Turkey,” the minister said. He recalled previous cases when sanctions related to Iran were eased by granting special permits.

Russia is the largest supplier of gas to Turkey, providing about 42% of imports in 2023.

In general, Turkey is largely dependent on Russia in the energy sector, in particular it imports about half of its oil and is building a nuclear power plant with Russia’s help.

Turkey and Russia are planning to create a gas hub in Turkey and are considering the possibility of laying new underwater gas pipelines.

We will remind:

In 2022, the United States introduced a new package of sanctions against Russia. The sanctions included approximately 2,600 visa restrictions for Russian and Belarusian officials, as well as the first sanctions against Gazprombank executives.

In June 2022, the former head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, called on partners to disconnect the Russian Gazprombank from SWIFT.

Russian “Gazprombank” stopped cross-border transfers in US dollars from January 27, 2023.

The US has imposed sanctions on Gazprombank, one of the few major Russian lenders not yet blacklisted, in a bid to limit the Kremlin’s ability to finance its war effort.
