US President-elect Donald Trump once again promised to end the war in Ukraine and instructed after the inauguration to arrange a call to the ruler of Russia, Vladimir Putin, to arrange a meeting with him.

Direct speech Trump: “I will stop the war in Ukraine. I will stop the chaos in the Middle East. I will prevent the Third World War.”

Literally CNN: “Trump has instructed his aides to arrange a call to Putin in the coming days after he is sworn in with the sole purpose of discussing a one-on-one meeting in the coming months to try to end the war in Ukraine.”

Details: As a presidential candidate, Trump promised to end the war within one day of taking office.

Literally CNN: “But on the eve of his inauguration, when there are few signs that the nearly three-year war is nearing an end, he is almost certain to break that promise.”

Details: Instead, Trump and his team hope to quickly begin work on a settlement plan that could be implemented within the first months of his presidency — including by talking directly with Putin.

Officials from Trump’s national security team began working on preparations for the phone call with Putin several weeks ago. It is currently unclear whether a date for the conversation has been finalized.

As soon as Trump takes office, American and Russian officials could begin serious work on arranging a face-to-face meeting. The new president said talks were already being organized, but the Kremlin said it would wait until Trump takes office to begin formal preparations. Switzerland and Serbia have said that they are ready to organize this meeting.

The publication notes that any talks between Trump and Putin would reflect “a sharp departure from President Joe Biden’s approach.”

After all, Biden did not speak directly with Putin for almost three years.

Literally CNN: “Trump sees things differently. His view, described by a person familiar with his thinking, is that direct engagement with Putin is exactly what is needed to find a solution that will end the war.”

Details: It is currently unclear how far Trump plans to continue the Biden administration’s strategy of providing weapons and intelligence to Kyiv, and — aside from his opposition to Ukraine joining NATO — he has not said what security guarantees he might agree to in order to satisfy President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

He also did not specify who would pay for the restoration of Ukraine, although, based on his previous comments, it is unlikely to be the United States.

What preceded: A few days ago, US President-elect Donald Trump announced that he is already working on organizing a meeting with Putin.

Commenting on this statement, the Kremlin noted that the Russian ruler is “open to contacts.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine reported that Kyiv expects a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and US President-elect Donald Trump shortly after his inauguration on January 20.
