Asked if he ruled out economic or military coercion to gain control of Greenland and the Panama Canal, Trump said: “I’m not going to commit to that. No. Maybe something will have to be done.”

He emphasized that the US needs these territories “for economic security.”
“We need Greenland for national security purposes.” People don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it, but if they do, they should give it up because we need it for national security,” Trump added.
Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire for the United States to acquire Greenland, a Danish territory and the largest island in the world.
He also previously demanded that Panama restore US ownership of the canal, one of the most important for international maritime trade, which it finally handed over to local authorities in 1999.
“Listen, the Panama Canal is vital to our country. It’s operated by China. China! And we gave the Panama Canal to Panama, not China,” the US president-elect told reporters.
It will be recalled that on Tuesday Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized that Greenland belongs to its inhabitants.
