Trump believes that Russia’s war against Ukraine would end “immediately” if the price of oil were lowered

US President Donald Trump is going to ask Saudi Arabia and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to lower the price of oil. In his opinion, a price reduction could stop Russia’s war against Ukraine.

“I am also going to ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to lower the price of oil. You have to lower it, which frankly I’m surprised they didn’t do before the election. I was a little surprised by this, because if the price had gone down, the war between Russia and Ukraine would have ended immediately,” the head of the United States said on January 23 during an online speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The White House press office said on Thursday that on January 22, the US president held his first telephone conversation as a foreign leader with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman. Among other things, the leaders discussed “trade and other opportunities to increase the mutual prosperity of the United States and Saudi Arabia.

In his inaugural speech on January 20, the US president announced a state of emergency in energy, which will allow the extraction of energy carriers where it was previously prohibited. Trump said the US would “refill our strategic reserves, to the top” and export energy around the world.

During his speech in Davos, Trump also emphasized that his administration will work on a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine.

“Our efforts to achieve a peaceful settlement between Russia and Ukraine, I hope, have already begun. It is so important to achieve this,” he concluded.

On January 22, the US president again called for the earliest possible conclusion of a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, threatening to introduce new sanctions against the Russian Federation in the event of Moscow’s rejection of the agreement.

Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin saw nothing new in US President Donald Trump’s threats to impose new sanctions against Russia and said that the Russian government “remains ready for an equal and mutually respectful dialogue.”

Earlier, CNN, citing sources, reported that Trump instructed aides to arrange a telephone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. According to them, the newly elected US president wants to talk to the president of the Russian Federation in the first days after the inauguration to discuss a personal meeting. It is claimed that Trump is expected to quickly start work on the settlement of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

After the inauguration, US President Donald Trump said that he could talk to Putin in the near future, but did not give specific dates.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi previously said that Trump could play a decisive role in ending the war with Russia and help stop Putin. On January 16, Zelensky said there is a chance to end the war in 2025, as Trump can pressure Russia on this issue.

Analysts of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) proved that the Kremlin does not want to make compromises in the war against Ukraine, but wants its complete surrender.
