Details: When asked about Scholz’s call, Trudeau said it was good to have an open line of communication with Putin.

“We all understand how important it is to see an end to violence in Ukraine, to see an end to conflicts around the world,” Trudeau said in Peru, where he was attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

“This requires a certain level of interaction with partners, with whom in many cases we do not agree,” he noted.

Trudeau was quick to add that Canada and its allies are still working closely with Zelensky. “It’s good that there are conversations about this, but the level of trust I have in Vladimir Putin is probably at an all-time low,” he said.

He said that Canada is committed to the victory of Ukraine and wants the conflict to end as soon as possible. “Perhaps there are windows in which this could happen in the coming months,” he said, without elaborating.

But ending the conflict on Ukraine’s terms will require US support with the arrival of Donald Trump’s administration, he said.

“Let’s be frank: all the allies in the world will not be able to replace the complete end of support for Ukraine by the United States,” Trudeau said.

It will be recalled that on the afternoon of November 15, it became known that Scholz spoke with the head of the Kremlin for the first time in two years. Then Zelenskyi called this call “Pandora’s box”.

Jurgen Hardt, a deputy from the main opposition party CDU/CSU, believes that Putin will consider Scholz’s move “as a manifestation of weakness, not strength.”

At the same time, the general secretary of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Matthias Mirsch, defended the chancellor’s decision.
