“As for the peacekeepers, we talked with Emmanuel about his older ideas. We support the idea of strengthening Ukraine, and you understand that. It is a question of details, we are discussing these details,” the president said.
Zelensky refused to disclose the details of the discussion, as it is a “difficult process.”
“I take it positively that Emmanuel has already had contacts with some leaders. I don’t want to say details yet, because we are in the process. And I see that there is already a positive response from some people about it,” he said.
On December 13, Radio Svoboda reported that Emmanuel Macron may bring up for discussion at the summit of European Union leaders on December 18-19 the issue of placing a peacekeeping mission on the territory of Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire and peace between Ukraine and Russia.
Publicly, many senior officials say these discussions are premature. In particular, Kaya Kallas, the new top diplomat of the European Union, expressed herself this way. But according to the interlocutor of Radio Svoboda, this discussion is inevitable, taking into account the visit of the French president to Poland and the discussion in the media on the topic of peacekeepers, as well as in view of the future coming to power of Donald Trump in the USA and the need to prepare for a discussion with him about the situation regarding the war in Ukraine.
France is trying to assemble a coalition of 5-8 European countries “determined to act,” Reuters news agency reported citing diplomats.
Macron has not yet made an official proposal to send a mission to the territory of Ukraine.
On December 18, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi and French President Emmanuel Macron held a meeting in Brussels. According to the Office of the President, they talked about military aid for Ukraine, strengthening air defense and long-range strikes.
Earlier, a Radio Svoboda correspondent, citing NATO diplomats not authorized to comment to the media, reported that Emmanuel Macron will not attend the European Union summit scheduled for tomorrow, December 19, due to a natural disaster in France’s overseas territories.
