These three political forces tried to form a government, preventing the far-right Freedom Party, which won the elections three months ago, from coming to power. However, their attempt failed due to critical differences in political programs.
After the September elections, all parties that entered the parliament ruled out the possibility of a coalition with the “Freedom Party” led by Kikle. However, after the failure of the coalition negotiations, the leader of the Austrian People’s Party, Karl Neghammer, who was most opposed to the alliance with Kicklem, resigned.
And the new leader of the party, Christian Stocker, allowed a possible alliance with the right-wing radicals, which opened the door to the possibility of forming a government from the Freedom Party and the Austrian People’s Party.
“Kikle is confident that he will be able to find a solution in government negotiations and he wants responsibility,” van der Bellen explained his decision to entrust Kikle with forming a new federal government.
“I will make sure that the principles and norms of the constitution are correctly observed,” the federal president added.
If the talks between the Freedom Party and the Austrian People’s Party are successful, Austria will have a far-right chancellor for the first time in its history.
