Donald Trump’s nominee for the president’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, expects US President-elect Donald Trump to have a phone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in the coming days or weeks. Trump’s adviser said this in an interview with the American TV channel ABC News.

According to Volz, the conversation will be the first step on the way to a meeting between Trump and Putin, preparations for which are already underway.

“We have not yet determined the exact structure of the meeting, but we are working on it,” said the congressman, answering the question whether the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi will participate in the meeting.

Walts emphasized that in order to reach an agreement on the Russian-Ukrainian military conflict, it is important to stabilize the situation at the front. According to the congressman, the US would like a cease-fire to occur “at any moment”, after which work on negotiations could begin. “Everything has to end in some diplomatic way,” Waltz said.

In addition, Waltz noted that Trump recognizes the “unrealism of plans to completely oust Russia” from the territories occupied by it, including the annexed Crimea.

On January 9, the US president-elect announced that a meeting was planned between him and Putin, but did not name its dates.

In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmytro Peskov said that Putin is open to negotiations without any preconditions. However, according to him, there are still no concrete plans for a meeting between Trump and Putin. Progress in organizing the meeting is possible after Trump’s inauguration, scheduled for January 20, the Kremlin spokesman added.

On January 7, during his first press conference, the US president-elect, when asked about the possibility of his meeting with the Russian president, said: “I can’t tell you this, but I know that Putin would like to meet.”

During the election campaign, the newly elected president said that he could end Russia’s war in Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office. Trump said at a press conference that he hopes to end hostilities within six months.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi previously said that Trump could play a decisive role in ending the war with Russia and help stop Putin.

In an interview with American podcaster Lex Friedman published on January 5, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that the first negotiations on the end of the war will be with the newly elected US President Donald Trump.

Analysts of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) proved that the Kremlin does not want to make compromises in the war against Ukraine, but wants its complete surrender.
