The new head of the European Council: peace in Ukraine “cannot be the peace of a cemetery”

“Peace cannot mean surrender. Peace should not reward the aggressor,” Antonio Costa said in his speech”, — write: www.radiosvoboda.org

On November 29, the previous head of the European Council, Charles Michel, officially handed over his powers to his successor, the former Prime Minister of Portugal, Antonio Costa.

In his speech, he called for the unity of Europe and the protection of European values: human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, human rights, including the rights of minorities:

“These values and principles are the very essence of Europe and our way of life. And they must be protected. This is the main lesson of Europe’s dark past, full of dictatorship and wars.”

Kosta mentioned the war in Ukraine, noting that the full-scale invasion of Russia lasted for one thousand and ten days.

“We all want peace. Especially the fighting and heroic Ukrainian people. But peace cannot mean peace in the cemetery. Peace cannot mean surrender. Peace should not reward the aggressor. Peace in Ukraine must be just; it must be stable and based on international law,” the politician said.

He emphasized that although the war continues on the territory of Europe, it puts at stake the general principles enshrined in the UN Charter: the right of peoples to self-determination and to choose their own future, as well as respect for territorial integrity and borders.

“Therefore, we must write a new chapter of the European Union as a peaceful project. Having become stronger, more efficient, more stable, and yes – more autonomous in the field of security and defense,” added Koshta.

The high representative of the European Union for foreign affairs, Josep Borrell, who is completing his work in this position, recently criticized the insufficient, in his opinion, support of Ukraine by the bloc. He also called on the EU to further restore its own defense capabilities.
