The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine urged Hungary to stop
“immoral manipulations” on the topic of peace and Christmas, and to refrain from unilateral contacts with Russia, which undermine joint efforts to restore a just peace. This is stated in the statement of the diplomatic agency.

As noted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hungarian officials are once again declaring that they are allegedly able to stop the war, but these statements are not true, and after Hungarian “peacemaking” calls to Moscow, missiles and drones are flying over Ukrainian cities.

“The actions of the Hungarian side are even more distant from peacemaking than its statements. Hungary consistently calls for Ukraine, which is defending itself against Russian genocidal aggression, to be left without weapons for self-defense, prevents financing of strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities, increasing sanctions pressure against the aggressor, and other critically important decisions. All this has nothing to do with the desire to restore peace,” the statement said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that Ukraine seeks peace on its land like no other in the world, and only Russia and its war-obsessed dictator stand in the way of peace.

Ukraine always adheres to the principles of honest dialogue and mutual respect and will continue constructive contacts with partners who sincerely seek the end of the war, not the defeat of Ukraine, the ministry added.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto, criticized his colleagues in the European Union for the fact that almost no one supported Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s proposal for a “Christmas truce” at the meeting of heads of diplomacy on December 16.

Before that, on the evening of December 11, Orbán accused the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, of the fact that the president rejected the offer of a Christmas truce and exchange of prisoners.

“At the end of Hungary’s EU presidency, we made new efforts for peace. We proposed a Christmas ceasefire and a large-scale prisoner exchange. It is sad that President Zelenskyi clearly rejected and excluded this today. We did what we could!” – Orban wrote on the X network, citing the Ukrainian leader’s hope that the Hungarian prime minister would not listen to the “hour-long lecture” of the ousted Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, who was accepted by Moscow after the overthrow of the regime.

“You don’t need to play on your own image at the expense of unity – you need to take care of joint success,” Zelenskyy wrote on social media, commenting on Orban’s talks with Putin.

Although later, as reported by the media, Peter Szijjarto said that the Hungarian initiative of “ceasefire and mass exchange of prisoners” was discussed during Orbán’s conversation with Vladimir Putin, after which the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry informed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine about it. According to the Hungarian minister, Budapest invited a telephone conversation between Orbán and Zelensky, but he was refused.
