This was reported by the IAEA representative, Reuters writes.
The Zaporizhzhya NPP, which is currently under Russian control, is the largest nuclear power station in Europe. All six of its reactors are stopped due to hostilities nearby.
“Our teams continue to confirm that there are currently no signs of active preparation for restarting the station,” the IAEA representative said on the conditions of anonymity.
The Ukrainian official reported on Wednesday that Kiev has addressed the IAEA protest because Russia was building power lines to connect the station to its own power system.
The Ambassador of Ukraine at IAEA Yuriy Vitrenko in a comment to Ukrinform stated that Kiev considers any attempts by Russia to connect the captured station to its network as a gross violation of international law and sovereignty of Ukraine.
On Tuesday, the New York Times, citing a new Greenpeace report, reported that Russia was building more than 80 km of transmission lines between the occupied Mariupol and Berdyansk.
In March, the chairman Raphael Grosssey in an interview with Reuters said that launching one of the six station reactors may be possible within a few months after the installation of a sustainable truce, which remains unattainable.
However, it will be necessary to restore the volume of water and external power supply. Of particular concern is the lack of water after the dam was destroyed in 2023 – the Kakhovsky Reservoir – the main water source for the station.
After that, wells were drilled at the Zaporozhye NPPs, which provide sufficient water to cool the fuel in the conditions of reactors stop. However, this is not enough for cooling in the case of reactors.
“The station has lost its main source of cooling water, so the system cannot work as it was designated,” the IEA representative said.
“During the operation of the water consumption station ten times more than during a cold stop. We do not see a simple or quick solution to this problem,” he added.
Recall:
Earlier it was known that Russia intends to restart and operate the occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP, despite the risks and calls to resolve the status of the station in peace talks.
Construction of power lines from Zaporizhzhya NPP to other temporarily occupied territories continues. A new highway was recorded in the Mariupol district of Donetsk region.
According to information former advisor to the mayor of Mariupol Peter Andryushchenkofrom February to May 2025, a distribution knot of the product pipeline together with the compressor station was built on one of the plots.
On another plot finish connections to the network.
