On the night of January 8, the Defense Forces of Ukraine hit the Krystal Plant oil storage base in Engels, Saratov Region, Russia, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.

“In the vicinity of the target, numerous explosions were recorded, a large-scale fire broke out. It should be noted that this oil depot supplied fuel to the Engels-2 military airfield, where the enemy’s strategic aviation is based,” the post states.

According to the General Staff, the destruction of the oil depot creates serious logistical problems for the strategic aviation of the Russian troops and significantly reduces their ability to strike Ukrainian cities and civilian objects.

In the morning, the governor of the Saratov region of the Russian Federation, Roman Busargin, wrote that the region suffered a massive attack by UAVs at night, there was damage to one of the industrial enterprises, but he did not specify which one. Russian telegram channels reported on the fire near the oil depot.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported the downing of 32 drones in seven Russian regions. In particular, 11 over the territory of the Saratov region.

After a series of large-scale Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that Ukraine would continue to strike military facilities on Russian territory. Previously, the Ukrainian side, confirming similar attacks on refineries on Russian territory, noted that such facilities are actively used to supply the occupying army of the Russian Federation.

Since the beginning of 2024, Russian refineries have been regularly attacked by Ukrainian drones. At some plants, primary oil processing units failed and required repair. However, already in April, Russia was able to partially restore the capacities of key oil refineries.

According to the BBC’s calculations, published in August, since the beginning of the year, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have attacked refineries and oil infrastructure in Russia at least 64 times.
