“I think we will have Taurus, because Mertz, as the most likely future chancellor, has spoken about it many times. Therefore, I cannot imagine that under any schedule of this coalition, even if the Social Democrats become a “junior partner” in it, they will block it,” said the diplomat, who headed the Ukrainian diplomatic mission in Germany for eight years.
The long-term ambassador of Ukraine to Germany, and now to Brazil, estimates the chances of Friedrich Mertz replacing Olaf Scholz as a social democrat at 99 percent. One percent is set aside for “something unforeseen.”
“This is going to be some kind of political earthquake, some kind of super scandal, which the Russians, by the way, can easily prepare. Unfortunately, they are capable of this. Some scandal, which, for example, will cause image losses to the potential chancellor Mertz in order to prevent this from happening,” Melnyk emphasized.
Early elections in Germany are scheduled for February 23, but Ukraine will not be able to get the missiles before the end of April, the diplomat believes, and this is an optimistic scenario.
“As a rule, coalition negotiations last at least two months. This is standard. Maybe longer. That is, it will mean that this government, which is now in place, will fulfill its duties until that time… This means that for the next half a year, most likely, nothing will happen. What will happen in half a year, given what will happen in America and so on, I honestly don’t want to make fortune-telling on coffee grounds today,” the diplomat summed up.

On November 19, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed his decision not to send long-range German Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, noting that Germany is and will remain Kyiv’s biggest supporter in Europe, but it is important to “do everything we do with prudence.”
“In my view, supplying cruise missiles would be a mistake for many reasons,” he added, citing the danger that it would bring Germany closer to direct conflict with Russia.
Speaking in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi criticized Berlin for not providing Ukraine with Taurus long-range cruise missiles to strike deeper at Russia.
