The ex-president was 100 years old, and he was the oldest US president of all time.
His son confirmed the death but did not give an immediate cause. In a statement issued in February 2023, the Carter Center said that the former president, after a series of hospitalizations, would stop further treatment and spend the rest of his time at home under hospice care. In recent years, he was treated for an aggressive form of melanoma skin cancer, the tumors of which spread to the liver and brain.
Carter’s wife, Rosalynn, died on November 19, 2023 at the age of 96. The Carters, who were close partners in public life, were married for more than 77 years, the longest presidential marriage in US history. His last public appearance was at her funeral in Plains, where he sat in the front row in a wheelchair. Carter was last photographed outside his home with family and friends as he watched an air show on October 1 to mark his 100th birthday.
