The European Union is preparing a new package of sanctions against Russia, reports Radio Svoboda’s Europe editor Rikard Yuzvyak.

“A new package of EU sanctions against the Russian Federation is being prepared, but first it will be presented to the member states next week. Aimed at aluminum, agricultural products, the shadow fleet, LNG and other banks,” he wrote on the social network Kh.

According to Rikard Jozwiak, it will be a “comprehensive package”, despite the fact that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find new areas for sanctions. The sanctions package deals with the fight against sanctions evasion. It also provides for restrictions on the import of aluminum, tariffs on agricultural products plus fertilizers, and the expansion of the list of vessels of the “shadow fleet” of the Russian Federation, in respect of which sanctions are applied.

The other day, the international media reported that ten EU countries proposed to stop all gas imports from Russia as soon as possible. These are Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Ireland and Finland.

The countries propose to ban the import of any Russian gas, both pipeline and liquefied.

The EU authorities are preparing another, 16th package of economic sanctions against Russia. It is planned to be announced at the end of February – before the third anniversary of the beginning of the full-scale military invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

The European Union has already banned the supply of Russian gas by sea, but could not completely abandon pipeline gas, as some European countries, in particular Slovakia and Hungary, depend on it. Their authorities have repeatedly criticized the EU’s sanctions policy and called for rapprochement with the Kremlin.
