The “European Truth” interlocutors emphasized that if the EU leadership plans are implemented, Entry/Exit System’s work will begin in October 2025 in all EU countries, but in the first six months, some states can implement it gradually.
“During the open session on March 5, the ministers will agree their positions and approve the provisions on commissioning of the entrance system Entry/Exit System,” one of the EU officials said.
According to him, there is no doubt that the document is supported by representatives of all EU Member States, since “at the EU Council there is a consensus, moreover, the document was supported by all EU Ambassadors in Brussels 3 and March 4.”
“The Entry/Exit system must work this fall,” the official said.
The diplomat of one of the countries of the European Union in conversation with the correspondent of “European Truth” said that it is planned in October 2025.
“The initial idea was to put Entry/Exit into operation in early November 2024, but it was not ready for all countries. Now it is now planned that the system will work in all EU countries since October 2025 – but with a transition period of 6 months,” he said.
He added that during the transition period, some states may not collect biometric data from travelers for some time, or collect them only at certain entry points.
“At the very beginning, some states, including those that have huge international airports in their territory, can use the Entry/Exit system at a certain time of day, and stop its use at the time when many travelers come at the same time,” the diplomat explained.
Six months later, at the end of the first quarter of 2026-all EU Member States should begin to collect biometric data of persons crossing their border, the interlocutor of “European Truth” said.
It is worth noting that after approval by the EU Council, the Entry/Exit System Regulations should also be approved in the European Parliament. According to unofficial information from the European Parliament, voting can take place at a session in July 2025.
Prehistory:
- In December 2024, the European Commission offered the member states the gradual implementation of Entry/Exit System (EES)-a new digital border system-during the six-month period.
- EES system She had to work in the European Union since November 10, 2024, but because of the denial of a number of Member States was postponed.
