The innovation introduces a ban on the export, transfer, supply or sale from the EU to Iran of components used in the development and production of missiles and UAVs.

The EU also imposes a ban on transactions and any operations with ports and gateways owned, managed or controlled by individuals and legal entities included in the sanctions list. This measure includes access to the infrastructure of ports and gateways such as Amirabad and Anzali and the provision of any services to vessels.

In addition, the Council of the EU adopted restrictive measures against one natural person and four legal entities.

The shipping company Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) and its director Mohammad Reza Hiabani were included in the list. IRISL is Iran’s national maritime carrier and for many years its vessels have been involved in transporting drones for Iran’s EU-listed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The EU Council also added three Russian shipping companies to the list – MG Flot, VTS Broker and Arapax. Their vessels are involved in transporting Iranian-made weapons and ammunition, including UAV components, across the Caspian Sea for the supply of Russian forces fighting in Ukraine.

We will remind:

  • In October, the EU announced the introduction of sanctions against three Iranian airlines, four companies and seven individuals over the supply of Iranian ballistic missiles and drones to Russia.
  • Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that his country did not supply Russia with ballistic missiles.
