Journalists note that these reports are difficult to independently verify, and that soldiers who are missing or presumed dead are not always reflected in the data. Nevertheless, they give a rough idea of the death toll.
Data from the UAlosses website shows that at least 60,435 soldiers have died since 2022. Unlike other sources, UAlosses catalogs the names and ages of the dead, which makes it possible to calculate losses by age group and as a percentage of the male population (although some women serve on the front lines, most fighters are men), writes The Economist.
These figures indicate that more than 0.5% of the pre-war population of Ukraine – men of conscription age (18-49 years) – died, but the UAlosses data are not exhaustive, and the age of not all soldiers is known, the journalists note.
The publication also recalls that in a November report by the Wall Street Journal, published with reference to anonymous representatives of Western intelligence, it is said that up to 200,000 Russian soldiers have died to date.
Currently, the Ukrainian side has not commented on the data published by The Economist.
Kyiv did not report its losses for a long time, saying that these data would be disclosed after the war.
On February 25, 2024, for the first time since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced the number of dead Ukrainian soldiers: 31 thousand. At the same time, Zelenskyi said that he cannot disclose how many Ukrainian soldiers are wounded and missing.
British intelligence said on September 17 that Russian losses since the beginning of the invasion were estimated at more than 610,000 people killed and wounded. According to the latest data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia lost about 735,410 of its soldiers during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Instead, Moscow last officially named the number of people killed in September 2022 – then it said about 5,937 dead on its side.
But the journalists who count the losses of the Russian Federation, as of November 8, 2024, have established the names of 77,143 Russian soldiers who died in the war against Ukraine.
