“This intensification is concerned because it is part of the trend that we have been watching for several years, when the use of chemical weapons in this war is becoming more normal, standard and common,” he said in an interview with the agency.
The head of the Netherlands military intelligence Peter Risink said the conclusions are based on “own independent intelligence”.
According to Bracelmans, at least three deaths of Ukrainians are related to the use of chemical weapons, and more than 2500 people wounded on the battlefield, were informed to the Ukrainian health authorities about the symptoms associated with chemical weapons.
And Risink, in turn, spoke of “thousands of cases” of the use of chemical weapons, referring to Ukrainian data on 9 thousand cases.
Breccelmans noted that the increased use of chemical weapons by Russia is a threat not only for Ukraine but also for other countries.
“We have to increase the pressure even more. This means to consider the possibility of imposing additional sanctions and, in particular, to prevent them (Russia) to participate in international bodies, such as the OPCC Executive Council,” he said.
The Dutch military and general intelligence services, in cooperation with foreign partners, say they have found specific evidence of the intensification of chemical weapons production in Russia.
This includes strengthening research and research and recruiting scientists for the development of chemical weapons, said Risink. He stressed that Russian officials gave the soldiers instructions for the use of poisonous combat substances.
“It’s not just improvised actions on the front line, it’s really part of a large -scale program. And this, of course, is also a concern, because if we do not clarify and make public what Russia is doing, these trends are likely to continue,” Risink said.
He called the use of chemical weapons by Russian armed forces “almost standard procedure”.
“We specifically linked the use of chlorpicrin with makeshift ammunition, such as filled light bulbs and empty bottles that are hung to drones. As for tear gas, we see that they also abuse and process existing ammunition to use them as gas carriers,” he said.
Chloropicrin is included in the list of forbidden suffocating substances of OPCH, which was created to implement and control compliance with the 1997 chemical weapon.
It can cause severe irritation of the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. Swallowing can cause mouth and stomach burns, nausea and vomiting, as well as breathing difficulty.
It should be noted that in May last year, the United States in justifying sanctions against Russia indicated that Russian troops were applied against the Armed Forces of Ukraine for a forbidden chemical – chloropicrin.
And in October, Britain imposed sanctions against three Russian institutions and one individual in connection with the use of Russian military chemical weapons against Ukraine.
