Trump did not withdraw his threats of punitive tariffs, the Prime Minister said at a short press conference after the meeting. “The American side expressed the opinion that, unfortunately, a situation may arise when we will work less together with the Americans in the economic sphere,” Frederiksen said.

“We don’t want to have any conflicts with the Americans in the trade sphere. But, of course, we are in the process of (preparation – ed.) together with companies, business organizations and our European colleagues,” she added.

The government will continue the dialogue on the entire situation around Greenland with the Trump administration when Trump officially occupies the White House on Monday, the Prime Minister said.

While Frederiksen said she could not reveal much about the conversation, she said Trump said Denmark was a great country.

The Prime Minister did not answer whether the conversation with Trump eased the crisis, which, it must be said, exists between the United States and Denmark. But she emphasized that “we are in a serious situation.”

“We’re doing everything we can to deal with this as wisely and well as possible,” Frederiksen added.

Prehistory:

  • Trump, who will take office on January 20, last week returned to the idea of acquiring the strategically important and mineral-rich Arctic island.
  • He put forward the idea during his first term, and called US control over the island, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, “an absolute necessity.”
  • The former US president-elect also did not rule out the potential use of military or economic means to gain control of Greenland, although his vice president, JD Vance, dismissed the possibility.
