The court chose a preventive measure for People’s Deputy Yevgeny Shevchenko in the form of taking him into custody until January 11, the correspondent of Radio Svoboda reports.

On Thursday, people’s deputy Shevchenko was charged with treason. He faces up to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.

The State Bureau of Investigation announced that Yevheniy Shevchenko, the current People’s Deputy of Ukraine, was charged with treason and detained. The spokeswoman of the DBR reported that the prosecution will ask for his detention.

Before that, Shevchenko wrote about the need to start negotiations with Russia, saying that it is time for President Zelensky to start a dialogue.

The head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak, later commented on the statements of the unnamed parliamentarians, saying that they were “confused in matters of national security.”

In response, Shevchenko called on Yermak “not to eliminate and not to bully people’s deputies” and stated that his position allegedly does not differ from the position of US President-elect Donald Trump.

In May 2021, people’s deputies from the “Servant of the People” faction in the Verkhovna Rada supported the expulsion of Yevgeny Shevchenko from the faction by a majority of votes. This happened after he met with Oleksandr Lukashenko in April of the same year. The faction then declared that he was not delegated to conduct any negotiations in Belarus.
