Syria was issued a warrant for the arrest of Bashar Assad

On September 25, the Ministry of Justice of Syria issued a correspondence warrant for the arrest of the former President of the country Bashar Hafes Assad.

Details: The document signed by the investigating judge Damascus states that the 60-year-old assad is prosecuted for the following crimes:

Advertising:

• intentional murder of two or more persons,
• an attack to provoke a civil war,
• torture that led to death.

The reasons were Articles 535, 533, 534 and 298 of the General Criminal Code of Syria, as well as Law No. 16 of 2022 on the ban on torture.

The order also lists the description of the wanted assad: height about 189 cm, blue eyes, chestnut hair.

Law enforcement agencies are obliged to arrest Assad, wherever he is and transfer it to the appropriate place of detention. Units of the Armed Forces may be involved in the order of the order.

Prehistory:

• The warrant was issued nine months after the Assad regime was falling in December 2024, when the revolutionary forces were taken control of the whole country. After the collapse of the Bahasist regime, which lasted 61 years, Assad fled to Russia, where he received a humanitarian shelter.
• During the years of the Revolution (2011-2024), Assad’s name was associated with numerous military crimes: chaotic shelling of cities, the use of chemical weapons, mass arrests and torture tens of thousands of people, as well as bloody massacres in different regions of Syria. Local and international human rights organizations have repeatedly placed personal responsibility for orders and systemic criminal acts that fall under the definition of crimes against humanity.
• The Syrian warrant coincided with the actions of European courts. In August 2025, French justice issued seven warrants for the arrest of high -ranking officials of the former Syrian regime, including Bashar Assad. They were accused of involvement in the bombing of the press center in Homs in 2012, when American journalist Mary Kolvin and French photographer Remie Oshlik were killed.
• International human rights organizations, including the International Federation of Human Rights and the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression, consider these warrants a step towards a possible trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
• On September 25, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Ukraine and Syria were signed by a joint communique about the restoration of diplomatic relations.
