Security Guarantees for Ukraine: Romania is ready to provide NATO with its military bases

Romanian Prime Minister Ilja Bologan said that providing military bases for NATO ally for F-35 fighters can contribute to his country’s contribution to an effort to achieve a long peace in Ukraine.

Details: The Prime Minister of Romania was asked to voice the government’s position that European leaders are asking the US to send F-35 fighters to Romania as part of security guarantees for Ukraine.

Bologan emphasized that throughout the months of the moment when the issue of maintaining safety guarantees for the establishment of a long peace in Ukraine was raised, Romania was adamant “at least two issues”.

He noted that the first of them is that the country will not send troops to Ukraine.

The second point in the discussions with the Allies, he said, was that, given the NATO membership, the military bases of the country, which are in any case operated jointly by Romanian and Nattous forces, mostly air forces, should be accessible for NATO troops.

“Even today, air patrols are carried out from our airports, air protection is conducted to monitor the situation in the Black Sea, organize joint military exercises, so it can be, so to speak, a contribution of Romania to support long -term peace in Ukraine. Providing our military bases for NATO ally,” Bolozhan said.

• On the morning of Wednesday, August 20, a meeting of the North Atlantic Council at NATO Ambassadors was held at the NATO headquarters at the NATO headquarters, which discussed the results of negotiations in Washington and processes for preparing security guarantees for Ukraine.
• The meeting was held in the framework of preparation for a roundtable with the participation of the military leadership of NATO States (Chiefs of General Staff), which took place later on the same day.
