The spokesman for the German federal government, Steffen Gebeshreit, said that Scholz “condemned the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and called on Putin to stop it and withdraw the troops.”

“The Federal Chancellor insisted that Russia should be ready for negotiations with Ukraine in order to achieve a just and lasting peace and emphasized Germany’s unwavering determination to support Ukraine in the peace process,” the message reads.

Also, the German government added, the chancellor emphasized “Germany’s unwavering determination to support Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression for as long as necessary.”

It will be recalled that the last telephone conversation between Putin and Scholz took place on December 2, 2022.

Thus, the Chancellor of Germany became the first head of government from the countries that support Ukraine the most, who resumed direct contact with Putin.

Previously, Scholz repeatedly emphasized that he is ready to talk with Putin about possible solutions to stop Russian aggression against Ukraine. Recently, the chancellor of Germany spoke about his readiness to hold talks with the Russian leader “soon”.

The Kremlin said that Putin was ready to talk to Scholz, but the Russian side did not receive any offers from Berlin.
