Law enforcement officers have started a pre-trial investigation into the alleged shooting by Russian troops of five captured soldiers of the Armed Forces near Vugledar, the Office of the Prosecutor General reports in a telegram.

A pre-trial investigation has been started in criminal proceedings for the commission of a war crime that caused the death of people (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The Prosecutor General’s Office reminds that the killing of prisoners of war is a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions and qualifies as a serious international crime.

Human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets also emphasizes that this is a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions.

The US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) says it has observed an increase in the number of executions by the Russian military of Ukrainian prisoners of war, and points out that Russian commanders are likely “tolerating, encouraging or directly ordering” the executions.
