Details: The leader of the Kremlin instructed the government to allocate to the Ministry of Defense the money from the budget necessary for the implementation of the decree.

Previously, Putin increased the size of the Russian army in December 2023, when the proportion of servicemen was 1.32 million. Before the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation in 2022, the number of servicemen in the Russian Armed Forces barely exceeded 1 million people.
The Ministry of Defense of Russia has not yet commented on Putin’s new decree. After the decree of December 2023, the department stated that the number of the army will be increased thanks to “citizens who express a desire to undergo military service under a contract”, therefore “a significant increase in the conscription of citizens for term military service is not planned, mobilization is not foreseen.” The ministry explained the increase in the size of the army by “increasing threats to the country related to the conduct of military operations and the ongoing expansion of NATO.”
