Details: It was Putin’s first conversation with a new head of the Catholic Church. The Kremlin head also confirmed “interest in achieving peace with political and diplomatic way, stressed that for the final, fair and comprehensive resolution of the crisis, it is necessary to eliminate its root causes.”

He also told the Pope about the specific “concrete agreement” on the exchange of prisoners of war and bodies of the dead during the second round and stated that allegedly “the Russian side was taking all possible measures to reunite children with relatives.”

In addition, Putin said that he allegedly “conducts sabotage on civil infrastructure in the Russian territory.”

Updated: The spokesman of the Holy See confirmed that there was a telephone conversation between Pope Lev XIV and Putin.

The Vatican press service states that special attention was paid to the situation in Ukraine and the topic of peace. The Pope urged Russia to make a gesture that will promote peace. He also emphasized the importance of dialogue to establish positive contacts between the parties and find ways to resolve conflict.

That preceded:

  • Pope Lion XIV himself proposed to give the Vatican as a place for negotiations between Ukraine and Russia – this idea was supported by Kyiv, European States and the United States.
  • However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made it clear that Moscow refuses to participate in negotiations with Ukraine in the Vatican: they say, the meeting of representatives of “two Orthodox countries” on the “Catholic site” – which seems to be “not very comfortable” for the Vatican himself.
