Italy and Denmark want to open a political debate on some European conventions, and how these documents are “written several decades ago” are capable of answering big challenges, including a migration problem.
The statement was also signed by the leaders of Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.
The signatories urge the European Court of Human Rights to give them more freedom in resolving the deportation of foreigners who commit crimes, as well as allow tracking of persons who cannot be sent.
“In our opinion, the safety and protection of victims and the vast majority of law -abiding citizens are an important and decisive right. And, as a general rule, this right should prevail other considerations,” the statement said.
In addition, the statement outlined the need to counteract the use of migrants by hostile states.
In the context of this statement, it is worth recalling the artificial migration crisis on the eastern border of Poland and the Baltic States. It originated since the summer of 2021 with the assistance of the Belarusian authorities – after the rigid reaction of these countries to repression in Belarus and forced landing on the Minsk flight for the arrest of an opposition blogger.
Despite the increased protection of the borders, the problem does not disappear permanently and occasionally exacerbates both Poland and Latvia with Lithuania.
Recall:
- In March 2025, the Polish government again announced the border protection from Belarus due to an increase in migration pressure and limited the right to seek international protection.
- And recently, Lithuania filed a lawsuit against Belarus to the UN International Court of Justice, accusing it of destabilization of the EU by organizing the illegal crossing of the border.
