Merz’s position on peacekeeping forces is in line with his predecessor Olaf Solz, who also gave priority to negotiations about a peace agreement, not to discuss the departure of peacekeepers to Ukraine.
The UK Prime Minister, Kir Starmer, has previously expressed his readiness to send peacekeeping troops, but only on the condition that the United States would guarantee security for European countries.
Russia, in turn, has repeatedly opposed the idea of placing NATO member countries in Ukraine.
