Journalists have reported the names of more than 91 thousand Russian soldiers who died in Ukraine

Journalists and volunteers were able to establish names of at least 91059 Russian soldiers who died during the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine, according to the regular consolidation of the Russian BBC and Media Again. In two weeks, 2 333 people were added to the erection.

Researchers keep a list based on open sources – information, state registers, statements of local administrations, posts of relatives on social networks and data from cemeteries. They say that real loss can be much higherbecause journalists’ analysis can cover from 45 to 65 percent of the possible number of dead. There is no public information about the death of many of them.

Medusa’s edition maintains the possible loss of the Russian army on the basis of the register of inheritance cases. It gives the figure about 120,000 dead.

Most of the deaths and funerals come from Bashkiria, Tatarstan, Yekaterinburg, the Perm Territory, Chelyabinsk, from Kuban and from the Moscow region. However, this may be due to the fact that in these regions the most active volunteers who collect data.

The Media Again also published an investigation according to which in 2024 the Russian courts received the largest number of claims in recent history for recognition of people as missing or dead – in 20040. This is two and a half times more than in previous years. According to the publication, the claims are massively filed by the commanders of military units, who “clean” the lists of personnel from those who probably died at the front, but the death is not officially confirmed.

The Russian authorities do not formally announce the loss at the front. In February 2024, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that 31,000 people had lost the Armed Forces since the beginning of the war. The Ualosses project, based on open data, then reported losses of 42 thousand, and now estimates the number of dead soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at 63.5 thousand.

On January 25, it became known that all heads of the regions of Siberia and the Far East ceased to report losses in Ukraine. This complicates the work of volunteers who calculate the killed and wounded.

Western intelligence estimates the losses of both Russia and Ukraine in hundreds of thousands of those killed and wounded, Russian losses are considered higher.
