There was a provocative sign on the mass grave of UPA soldiers in Poland, which could cause a new round of tension in Polish-Ukrainian relations.

Details: On the cemetery hill in the village of Monastery, in the Gmina Gornets-Zdrui in Subcarpathia, a conflict around the monument to the soldiers of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army broke again. The memorial, established by the Ukrainian community in the 1990s in honor of the victims with the Soviet troops, has repeatedly become a target for vandalism.

This time someone set the plate, with the inscription: “The mass grave of Ukrainians, UPA participants responsible for terror and genocide against the defenseless Polish, Ukrainian and Jewish population.
Lord God, have mercy on them and do not enroll in them for the terrible actions they have done against their brothers.
Forgive does not mean to forget, but heal pain“.

The first attack was recorded in 2015: then unknown smashed a plaque with the names of the Upons, repainted the cross in the colors of the Polish flag and replaced Ukrainian symbolism with Polish.

In 2020, the story was repeated – the new memorial plate was completely destroyed, its fragments were thrown into the pit.

Subsequently, a new plaque written in Ukrainian and Polish was installed on the spot, but without mentioning names. The text was only about the mass grave of Ukrainians who died on the night of March 2 to March 3, 1945 during a battle with Soviet troops.

This option caused dissatisfaction on the part of the Ukrainian side, but the board remained in place until recently. A new sign of provocative content appeared on the grave.

The Ukrainian UPA Ukrainian soldiers are guilty of terror and genocide regarding the Polish, Ukrainian and Jewish populations. The text calls for Christian forgiveness, but at the same time does not exclude the condemnation: “Forgiveness does not mean oblivion, but healing pain.” In addition, the cross was replaced by a trident with a Christian symbol.

According to preliminary information, the installation of a new plate was carried out without permission, so the case is investigated by the police of the city of Lubachiv.

According to police representative Marzhena Mrochkovskaya, law enforcement officers arrived in place, documented changes and now establish persons involved in the incident.

Recall:

• The Ukrainian side for a long time demanded the restoration of the table on the UPA soldiers in the monastery. This was the main condition of Kiev to restore the exhumation of the remains of Poles in Ukraine.
• In the end, Ukraine gave permits to restore exhumation, but the plate in the monastery was not properly restored – so that it has a list of names of UPA warriors.
• In January, the Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga stated that the issue of restoration of the monument on the Mountain Monastery remains on the agenda. He insisted that Ukraine demands a decent honoring of Ukrainian memory in Poland.
