On Tuesday, the country has signed a contract of 2 billion cubic meters of gas to be delivered for ten years since 2026. This was announced by Foreign Minister Peter Siyarto in an interview in the Gastech conference fields in Milan.
According to him, deliveries will come to Hungary through Czech and German gas pipelines.
Although the EU plans to stop importing Russian fossil energy by the end of 2027, Hungary has long been objected to these plans. Budapest urged the EU to compensate for member states to diversify and now seem to have begun steps to find alternatives.
“We are negotiating with several contracts with other Western suppliers, but are not yet ready to declare them,” Siyarto said.
At the same time, he noted that the current EU plan for the step -by -step refusal to import Russian energy is still a serious risk to Hungary’s energy security, since the country does not have enough pipeline infrastructure from other markets to provide the required volume.
The country has a contract with Russian Gazprom for supply of 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year by 2036, which after 2022 was Supplemented by additional purchases.
Siyarto also stated that Hungary’s nuclear ambitions, which provide doubling of atomic capacity by introducing two new reactors, will reduce the current gas importation of gas and significantly reduce the pressure on fuel supplies, which will help the country to cover 70% of electricity needs on its own.
The European Union plans to completely stop importing Russian gas by the end of 2027.
