The text emphasized that the presidential elections in Belarus were held in conditions of unprecedented repression and restrictions on the work of mass media, so they cannot be considered free, fair and legitimate.
The Belarusian service “Radio Svodoba” initially reported that Hungary and Slovakia did not support the draft statement. But later Bratislava supported the statement, and Hungary – the only one of all 27 member countries – refused to sign it.
Because of this, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaya Callas, and the European Commissioner for EU Enlargement, Marta Kos, were forced to publish their statement, where they announced the fictitiousness and illegitimacy of the “elections” of the President of Belarus on January 26.
Prehistory:
- The self-proclaimed president of Belarus, Oleksandr Lukashenko, said earlier that he was “purple” whether the West would recognize the president’s “elections”.
