During the past day, 184 combat clashes were recorded on the fronts. Most of the fighting took place in the Pokrovsk region and in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, according to the report of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on January 6.

“In the Pokrovsky direction, our defenders stopped 51 assault and offensive actions of the aggressors in the areas of Elizavetivka, Vozdvizhenka, Myrolyubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Novy Trud, Pishchane, Solone, Novovasylivka, Novoelizavetivka and Yasenove settlements,” the message states.

According to the headquarters, in the Kursk region, the Russian Air Force is striking with guided aerial bombs on the territory of Russia. At present, it is known about eight air strikes with the use of 14 anti-tank missiles and 445 artillery shells. There were 47 attacks by the Russian army.

“According to the updated information, yesterday the enemy launched three missile strikes using four missiles, as well as 65 airstrikes, dropping 99 anti-aircraft missiles on the positions of Ukrainian units and populated areas. In addition, it carried out 5,484 attacks, of which 188 were from rocket salvo systems, and used more than 2,900 kamikaze drones for strikes,” the Armed Forces say.

Also, the offensive actions of the Russian troops took place in the Kharkiv, Kupyan, Lyman, Kramatorsk, Toretsk, Kurakhiv, Vremiv and Dnieper directions.

On January 5, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation of the NSDC, reported that “Russian troops in Kursk were attacked from several directions, which was a surprise for them.”

According to the American Institute for the Study of War, Ukrainian forces resumed offensive operations on at least three directions within the Ukrainian salient in Russia’s Kursk region and achieved a tactical advance on January 5.

Subsequently, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation confirmed that the Armed Forces of Ukraine had launched a new assault on Kurshchyna. At the same time, the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, announced “good news” from the Kursk region” and that Russia “receives what it deserves.”

The armed forces of Ukraine began an operation in the Kursk region on August 6, occupying more than 1,000 square kilometers. Then the Russian army, with the help of North Korean troops, was able to recapture part of the territory.

In November, the Reuters agency, citing a high-ranking Ukrainian military source who works in the General Staff of Ukraine, reported that due to Russian counterattacks, Ukraine had lost more than 40% of the territory in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, which it captured during hostilities in August. According to the source, Russia has deployed about 59,000 troops in the Kursk region.
