The leaders of the largest Group of Seven (G7) democracies reaffirmed their pledge to continue to make Russia pay a heavy price for its incursion into Ukraine through sanctions, export restrictions and other measures, according to a November 16 statement.

The statement, adopted on the eve of the 1000th day of full-scale Russian aggression against Ukraine, is dedicated to supporting Ukraine.

The G7 reaffirms its commitment to inflicting serious costs on Russia through sanctions, export controls and other effective measures. We are united with Ukraine,” states the member states.

The other day, the European Parliament called on the G7 countries to strengthen control over compliance with price restrictions on Russian oil, significantly lower the upper limit of the oil price, and eliminate loopholes used by Russia to sell oil and oil products at market prices.

In June 2024, the European Union approved the 14th package of sanctions against Russia, which, among other things, provided for restrictions on Russian LNG. In particular, the EU authorities introduced a ban on its transit through European ports, and also banned the re-export of Russian gas.

From December 2022, the price ceiling for Russian oil established by Western countries will be in effect. After its introduction, Russia began to use the so-called “shadow fleet” for oil exports – old tankers that turn off beacons so that they are not seen by surveillance systems.
