Dmytro Kuleba, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, has expressed his belief that President Volodymyr Zelensky is likely to be re-elected in the upcoming presidential elections. Kuleba described Zelensky as a leader suited for wartime, asserting that he has demonstrated greater effectiveness in this role compared to his tenure during peacetime.
In an interview with journalist Dmytro Gordon, Kuleba stated, “Objectively, he is a wartime leader. He is a more successful president in wartime than in peacetime.” He emphasized that Zelensky is capable of managing the responsibilities that come with this role.
However, Kuleba also highlighted the urgent need for both presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine. He acknowledged the risks associated with conducting elections during an ongoing war but argued that failing to hold elections could pose an even greater risk if the conflict continues to drag on.
Context of Elections in Ukraine
Presidential elections in Ukraine were originally scheduled for March 2024. Due to the ongoing Russian invasion, the country is currently under martial law, which prohibits the holding of elections. Reports from The Times indicate that elections may not occur in 2026 either, primarily due to opposition resistance against digital voting.
Additionally, logistical challenges remain significant, particularly in ensuring access to voting for approximately six million refugees abroad, about three million Ukrainians living under Russian occupation, and military personnel.
