The first negotiations on the end of the war will be with the newly elected President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said in an interview with the American podcaster Lex Friedman.

Zelensky announced a possible meeting with Trump to discuss ending the war.

“I think on January 25 or another day we will sit down with Trump first of all. We agree on how we can stop the war and (President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin – ed.) Putin,” he said.

The president emphasized that “if Trump offers strong security guarantees for Ukraine, then after that there can be a conversation with the Russians.”

“And only like that, not just the three of them sat down at once,” he added.

Previously, analysts of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) proved that the Kremlin does not want to make compromises in the war against Ukraine, but wants its complete surrender.

Kyiv has repeatedly stated that it cannot agree to any territorial concessions by Russia or freezing of the conflict. Such a freeze, according to the Ukrainian authorities, will only help Russia better prepare for a new attack on Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said in December that in 2025, Ukraine should do everything to “turn out to be strong and already move to diplomacy.”

He noted that the Ukrainian army lacks the strength to liberate some territories occupied by Russia and that diplomatic solutions must be sought. And in a conversation with Sky News, Zelensky allowed the end of the hot phase of the war on the condition that the government-controlled part of the Ukrainian territory will be taken under the NATO umbrella, which will allow him to later agree on the return of the occupied territories “by diplomatic means.”

Keith Kellogg, the special representative of the newly elected US President Donald Trump for Ukraine, expressed his belief that Ukraine and Russia are ready for peace talks.

On December 6, Russian Foreign Minister Serhiy Lavrov said that peace in Ukraine is possible only if Ukraine renounces NATO membership and loses part of its territories.
