Details: According to Politico, the buffer zone is one of several proposals discussing military and civilian officials for post -war settlement or truce in Ukraine. However, there is no single position between the countries on the depth of such a zone, and it is unclear whether Kiev will agree, as it is about potential territorial concessions. The United States, according to diplomats, is not currently involved in these discussions.

But the fact that officials consider blocking the lane of the Ukrainian territory to ensure fragile peace, indicates the despair of NATO Allies, the publication.

“They grab for a straw,” says the former high -ranking official of Pentagon Jim Townsnd.

“The Russians are not afraid of Europeans. And if they think that several British and French observers will stop them from invading Ukraine, then they are mistaken,” he adds.

Literally: “The demarcation is of great historical importance. European diplomats do not compare it with a carefully protected border between North and South Korea, which are still in a state of war. They compare it more with the division of Germany during the Cold War.”

Details: Regarding the number of soldiers to control the buffer zone, officials discuss the numbers from 4,000 to 60,000 peacekeepers. However, no country has taken over official obligations. US President Donald Trump has already rejected the opportunity to attract US troops.

Literally: “NATO is already trying to prepare the response forces of 300,000 servicemen to protect the eastern flank of the Alliance from the future Russian attack. According to two diplomats, any peacekeeping forces will play a double role: they will patrol near the demilitarized zone and train Ukrainian troops at the same time.

Details: Discussions are currently underway regarding the rules of use of force, possible escalation scenarios and the role of third countries, if the Kremlin opposes the presence of NATO forces.

According to two European officials, French and British troops will probably form the basis of a foreign military contingent, and these countries convince other allies to provide military support.

At the same time, Poland and Germany opposed the sending of troops to Ukraine, fearing that it would make them vulnerable to Russia’s attack.

European countries are negotiating with Washington to provide satellite intelligence and aviation support. The US, which have the highest technical capabilities in this area, can play a key role in monitoring Russia’s compliance with agreements.

High-ranking Pentagon officials have already told their European colleagues that the US will play a minimal role in any guarantees of Ukraine’s security, Politico reports.

“Everyone is waiting for the US Department of Defense to clarify how far they are ready to go and allow Europeans to show their cards,” one of the European officials said.
